How to Improve Reading Skills in Children?

Reading is an important part of everybody's life but it is more vital in your child's life as they are in the learning stage and there will be lot of reading required in their school life. First they will learn to read and then they will be reading to learn. Hence as parents you should ensure that reading and learning is an enjoyable experience. 1. Fix a regular time


In order to make your child enthusiastic about reading ensure that you fix a regular reading time. It can be before bedtime, or in the afternoon or in the morning. Whatever suits you and your child, but try to stick to one time everyday. Before long when your child is able to read themselves they will be looking forward to that time.

2. Reading material


Fill your home with various reading material according to your child's age. You can spread children's magazine with colourful pictures, or story books, fairy tales among other reading material that you think will interest your child.

3. Family reading time


Make reading a family affair. You can do that by discussing the read books at the dinner table or fixing a time of the day when each of the family members will read something of their interest for at least thirty minutes. Lead by example. Let your child see your interest in reading.

4. Variety of reading activities


Encourage your child to make reading a part of his life. Motivate your child to read menus, road signs, hoarders, general travel information, weather reports, movie listings, or any other everyday information like reading the food labels while buying food items.

5. Library habit


Inculcating the library habit when your child has started reading is a great idea to develop and improve reading skills. Making trips to the library will also entice your child to reading and they will be gobbling up books like a bookworm. Participate in reading programmes suitable to your child's age.

6. Record your child's progress


Get the statistics from an expert and keep a record of your child's progress. There are certain reading skills at every grade and as a parent you should know whether your child is meeting the reading skills recommended for their age or not.

7. Watch out for reading problems


Often the reading problems are left undetected till it becomes too late. So watch out if your child is having problems in reading, decoding or understanding any word. Ensure that your child understands what he is reading.

8. Seek help for reading problems


If you feel that your child has reading problems - like he does not understand what he is reading, has difficulty in pronouncing words then it is time to seek an immediate help from teachers, tutors or learning centres.

9. Various aids to improve reading


Today have a varied choice of aids to improve reading skills in children. Aids like books on audio cassette, CDs, or DVDs, specially designed computer programmes, word games on and off the Internet. Use these aids to help improving the reading skills of your child.

10. Show enthusiasm towards your child's reading

When your child is reading show enthusiasm towards it. You can do that either by appreciating his efforts or by joining with your child in the reading activity thus making it a fun activity. How you react will influence on your child's reading skills hence be sure to be positive in your reaction.
